The Tarnished Crow's Last Run

A short story told from the crow-last-run storyline, produced by the xenovoid render farm.

Captain Vrek Halloran (the loadout's pre-seeded antagonist) is closing a blockade net around you, one missed jump at a time. A single pressure clock — Vrek's Net — fills on your failures and reframes the run from 'outrun him' to 'cornered, pick your fight.' Killing or losing Vrek opens a different ending than slipping the net clean.

All the while, Vrek's Tightening Net tightens; when it fills, Vrek springs the blockade. Every clean jump corridor is now watched, bribed, or mined; you are out of black sky. The hunt becomes a confrontation on his terms — fight through, parley from weakness, or burn something you can't get back to slip the cordon.

You still have sky. Vrek is a contact on the long scan, not a shadow on the hull. Run the corsair's game — jump unpredictably, trade favors at grey-market slips, ask the Oracle when a route's safety is in doubt. Every clean roll buys distance; every miss is the net drawing one knot tighter.

The net is real now. Vrek has bought the right informants and salted your jump corridors — you are running out of black.

Vrek is off the board — dead, captured, or burned past pursuing. The net goes slack, but it doesn't vanish: a corsair fleet remembers who killed a captain, and the informants Vrek bought are now masterless and for sale. Play the quiet after the hunt — the cost of having won, and who comes asking next.
