The Severance Run to Stelmaria

A short story told from the stelmaria-severance storyline, produced by the xenovoid render farm.

Roya Vesk taking the Tarnished Crow back onto the Stelmaria run to break Captain Vrek Halloran's syndicate hold; the secondary subplot is Greasehands' debt, the death she owes the captain, braiding into the main plot at the midpoint and converging at the floor. A miss-heavy run fills the syndicate's bounty net, and the moment it tips past four segments the conditional directive stops the running and forces Roya to hold ground — every promise planted on the run bites before it can close.

Early, things are set on the board — Vrek Halloran 'knows your tells' — he reads Roya cold because he commanded her — across all those years Roya learned one of HIS: the thing he does before he springs a patient trap, a habit only a former subordinate would catch; Data-ledger early that proves who really owns Stelmaria's air and water leases — the paper trail the syndicate buried, the names behind Vrek's corridor. A chip Greasehands lifted, a manifest that doesn't match the official lease, the thing officials would deny exists.

All the while, the Syndicate's Bounty Net tightens; when it fills, the bounty Vrek set is called in. Skimmers and freelance hunters converge on the Tarnished Crow's vector all at once, drawn by the syndicate's coin. Every dock on the Stelmaria run is hostile ground now — the syndicate owns the air and water, so there is no berth that won't sell Roya out the moment she clamps on.

Roya commits past the point of no return — a fuel cache burned behind her, an iron vow spoken aloud and witnessed at the last free dock, the Crow burning hard for the Stelmaria corridor with no legal berth left to her.

A false read flips. Roya thought she was breaking a smuggling skim; she learns Vrek doesn't just tax the Stelmaria run, he owns the leases on its air and water outright — the corridor IS the syndicate, and severing it means severing the thing keeping the settlements breathing. Roya stops reacting to Vrek's moves and starts hunting the lease itself.

The dark night. The Boltdriver jams at the worst moment, a witnessed vow looks broken before the people it was sworn to, Greasehands' death-debt comes due, or Vrek springs the trap he's been laying since he set the bounty — Patient Hunter, and he knew Roya's tells.

Vrek Halloran, the Stelmaria leases, and the Tarnished Crow converge into one beat — a stand-off at Stelmaria's locks with the syndicate's grip on the corridor in the balance.

Show what the Stelmaria run is now — who holds the air and water leases, what the severance cost Roya and the Crow, where Greasehands stands now that the death-debt is settled. One quiet beat of the new equilibrium on the corridor, then close.

Beneath the main line runs a second thread — The Engineer's Debt.

Establish Greasehands: she keeps the Tarnished Crow flying because she owes Roya — the captain — a death, a debt spoken plainly and never explained in full. Shape of it: a name she won't say, a shift she takes silently, a moment where saving the Crow and clearing her debt might point in different directions.

Greasehands' debt pushes on the main plot. The death she owes turns out to be tangled in the Stelmaria run — a name Vrek can hold over her, a choice between keeping the Crow flying and paying what she owes. Her debt now pressures Roya's hunt instead of running beside it.

Greasehands' debt resolves into Roya's lowest moment — she pays the death she owes, or refuses it and breaks with the Crow, or Vrek forces the reckoning at the floor.

By the end, the planted threads come due — At the Stelmaria confrontation Roya reads Vrek's tell before he springs it and turns his own Patient Hunter instinct against him — the planted habit is what lets her break the trap instead of walking into it; Resolve what Roya does with the ledger — broadcast it to break the syndicate's hold openly, trade it to Vrek for the Crow's freedom, or use it to seat a new order over the Stelmaria run. The new equilibrium on the corridor is shown through who ends up holding the air and water.
